Roof Guide: Gutter Repair and Maintenance

Most homeowners forget the importance of their gutters once they have been installed. Most often than not, they are left for decades to be clogged or become nesting place for some pests until they eventually give out and cause some problems for the homeowners.

But what exactly is the purpose of gutters anyway? Well, to sum it up, during a rainstorm, gutters are the ones responsible for directing those water away from your basement and roof decks and causing damage to your home. Unfortunately, these gutters need proper maintenance in order to do their job effectively. Which is why we are here to impart some tips on how to properly maintain and take care of your gutters.

1. Clean Out Clogs

Clogged gutter systems are the worst. Never let them fill up with rainwater because it will overflow and cause damage to other parts of your house. It’s important to clear out your gutters at least twice a year to prevent clogging. Preferably during the fall in order to get rid of the leaves and also at the end of spring.

You don’t even have to climb on your roof to clean them. Just a simple ladder, scooping debris into sacks, and using hose for good measure will do.

2. Check For Pooling and Holes

Check if there are other problems regarding your gutters once you’ve finished cleaning them out. Pooling usually occurs when there’s a blockage somewhere in the system, probably there’s a clog in the tube. You can use a plumber’s drain snake to get rid of the blockage.

Leakage, on the other hand, means that your gutter is worse for wear and sporting some holes. Running water through the gutter and having someone watch out for leaks is how you’ll know which part of the system has holes. Small holes can easily be covered with roofing cement over the hole while larger ones can be fixed with metal flashings.

We hope that these tips can help you in maintaining your gutters. And if you have any questions or need roofing services, contact Best Roofing Cedar Rapids right away! We’ll try to help you to the best of our abilities.
